Tilt and Turn
Another lesson learnt and another big escape!

December First week
Most of the profit as always has come from the UK and US horse racing, but had some decent success on the greyhounds and dipped my toe into the soccer on saturday and a cheeky bet on X factor on Sunday (special bets), together with a small forray into the aussie racing this morning.
My P and L for December is summarised as follows:-
UK Wallet
Football: £93.41 | Greyhound Racing: £583.68 | Horse Racing: £2,124.18 | Special Bets: £93.41 Total P&L: £2,894.68
Aussie Wallet
Greyhound Racing: £31.16 | Horse Racing: £36.94 Total P&L: £68.10
Very pleased with the current progress for December. These figures take me over the £20k made on Betfair since the start of this blog

Decent 3 days to start December
Not done much on the US racing because I've been a bit tired in the evenings so got out as soon as I was in profit on them.
Only one silly bet so far which almost sent me on tilt.
Delighted with .......
Profit = £2,135.78 (December)

November Has Been Tough
I've been in a better frame of mind though the past few days and started to claw ssome back. Betfair is down at the moment so can't check my Pand L but I think I'm about £400 down for November. I need to update all my figures anyway and I'm going to start recording them outside betfair in a spreadsheet on a daily basis.
Part of my problem has been I was messing about with my daily depsoit limt on betfair and accidently set to to just £500 a day. So i ended up trying to turn the £500 into a £2k bank which I got close to on a number of occasions but ended up losing the £500 on a few occasions! Anyway I'm back to normal now and as I have said, slowly clawing things back.
Will update my figures of October, November and running total later.

Betfair - £4700 Betdaq + £6600
I had a stupid stupid big bet on a horse I was given and was hoping to trade out some but it just kept drifting and I didn't get out. Lost £1400 on the first race. Then I had an even bigger bet on a horse that was even more strongly fancied. It drifted and drifted and drifted and lost! So I did nearly £5k in on my betfair and moved over to betdaq. I backed three godolphin horses and upped my stake each time. ALL three won and ALL three drifted. So I was £1600 up on the day but my betfair P and L shows a different story. Not bothered though I'll forget the betdaq win for my stats for the blog and call it a nice £6.6k bonus :-)
So I have a target to make the £4.7k back by the end of the month. Only 2 days ha ha unlikely. Only got £396 in my betfair account and can't deposit anthing until tomorrow because of my self impossed limits so I'll see how far I can get that in the next two days. It would be nice to get back to my £2k betfair bank without having to deposit. Either way my October figures will be good without the betdaq win and I have another £1600 to treat myself with!!!!
BIG let off :-) :-) :-)

Control losses and profits

A decent enough day for little effort
Learning Lessons - RONALDO I LOVE YOU!
Anyway, early doors my staking got me into trouble (LESSON 1) fortunately my banker bet of the evening which was an amazing 7/4 when I expected it to be odds on, got me out of trouble. I should have just quit then, I was a few quid down but up on the day and if I had a proper look at the cards ahead (particularly later on) I would have done (LESSON 2). But no I continued aiming to make a profit and my eratic staking continued (LESSON 3) and got me into an evening bigger mess. I wasn't blindly chasing, I was waiting for what I thought were good opportunities but my luck was out. I layed a fav and back a 2nd fav, the swing was huge and mine lost in a photo when it looked the winner all the way up the straight but that happens in racing and it will go the other way one day. By this point there was very little racing left and it was getting late. I wasn't posting my selections on the forum. I placed a massive bet and the horse absolutely hacke up by about 12 lengths. I won't forget the horses name in a hurry, Ronaldo, I will never show hatred for the ex -man utd now with real madrid footballer again! For the first time that night I was in front.
It was reckless and I shouldn't have been there in the first place and in future I wouldn't have been so lucky (LESSON4) but boy was I happy.
The profit for a turbulent day was £588.07

How do you stop yourself?
Within the space of less than 2 hours I managed to rack up a £2.5k loss on aussie racing and it may have been more but my funds were limited so 'I had to' be careful. Basically I was reckless yet again.
By the end of the day I managed to turn things around with some decent form on the UK racing and turn out a profit of around £200 for the day.
Food for thought and so much for having a day off!
I need to get some discipline. May be if I say it enough then I'll start to act on it!!
Two Months down the line and some might say I give up Ozzie
Not been any activity since my last post but I realised that it's exactly two months since I started recording my progress so I thought I'd post some screen shots while I have time!
What you will see is my UK wallet is showing a very healthy profit and my AUS wallet is showing a huge loss. I put this down to chasing and some heavy chase bets lost on the aussie stuff but I will be keeping an eye on my aussie horse and greyhound profits over the next couple of weeks to see if there is a profit.
The sum total of all this is that my profit for the first two months stands at £14,363.49
In a way though this is pretty meaningless while I still am struggling with my chasing issues!

It happend AGAIN !!! Ground Hog Day

Some great information!!!
So, where do I start had a cracker of a day yesterday. Was given a really strong tip last week and I waded in on it! I know that this breaks my rule but the info was really really strong so I went vert big win and place. I collected just over £3k on Betfair, and included it in a eachway Lucky 15 with a bookie and had one other winner and two placings. I won nearly £600 from that bet as well. I had another winner and two good session on the US racing and a small session on Oz racing.
Stats for yesterday were - £4,196.16 UK + £46.56 AUS
Also had a small session on the Oz racing this morning and won £42.45
So currently my month to date stands at - £10169.84. Which is huge!!!
Last month was £1891.67 so the total is £12061.51 since the start. But as last month proved it could all go horribly wrong if I don't keep my discipline.
I was concerned after yesterdays great day that I would get ahead of what I know is reasonably acceptable. But I kept things steady and ground out a decent profit in last nights US racing sessions. I know that if I get enough sessions in each week I would be able to hit £2k every month quite easily so I think I'll have that as my target moving forward.
Obviously this month I will easily surpass that so I'll set a target from today 13th October to make £1500 by the end of the month. Which means that I need a total of 25 sessions if I make £60 a session as a minimum. I think I will target 20 sessions at £75 a go.

Busy Weekend !
I didn't have any sessions durig the day because I was busy putting decking down in the back yard. Then in the evening I decided to have a small session in the evening even though I was a bit tired. the secod bet won, I had backed it quite big (£65) at prices around 15's on betfair as I thought it was sure to shorten and I would trade some out. It didn't shorten even though it went off 5/1 on track and ended up storming in!
Yesterday I had two tips, went quite big on the first one which won at 4/1, I made areound £900. I'd also had a small eachway double on the two at the bookies so I just went small w/p on the 2nd and it came nowhere.
Had a small session last night and was losing quite heavily, about £2k down at one point. Landed a decent bet which got me back to only £800 down and decided to take a break for a bit. I thought about what I should so and had been given a american footbal tip to back earlier in the day from a mate at even money. I put £800 on that. Then I went back to the US racing. The first bet was a lay of the fav and the back to a 12's shot in the same race. The 12's shot won which got me back another £600. So I was actually only £200 down, so I traded out of the american football bet until I only had £200 on the bet. That won as well which netted me about £18 profit for the session.
So Saturday and Sunday proved to be very profitable and made sure that the figures for the first two months of the challenge will be nice and healthy
Profit was = £1,723.36
Also had a small session this morning which I mad £46.56

Two weeks wages in One Day
Tough Times! Time to STOP ..... STOP CHASING
Well alot has happened since my last post and it hasn't involved making any profit !!!! Lost about £4k towards the last day of last month. Fortunately it didn't end the month at a loss, but in my mind it did and I felt compelled to recover the lost money as soon as possible. So the inevitable happened and I lost some more.
From Day One until the end of September My profit was £1891.67
Anyway I'm not going to kid myself, I started losing (but not through chasing) after the initial big loss for a few days on the trot. Then I went through a few days of decent profit before losing again and probaly hitting an all time low of somewhere around -£5k for the challenge. Anyway, I have turned that around and the last couple of days have been very kind on all fronts and helped to build on my restored confidence, particular in my speciality which is US racining.
The sum total of all this I have made £3632.84 profit this month and therefore £5524.51 since the start.
I got myself out of jail but I'll only be a consistent winner if I learn from this and STOP CHASING
Just to show what a turn around it's been. At one point yesterday I had £500 in my bank after starting the day with £4k. I layed an odds on greyhound that lost and from there I managed to build my bank and end the day with over £7k and I followed this up by steadily making £2k profit after having a poor start. To be honest my staking yesterday was no different from normal. I just kept backing winners. In fact last night on the US I was only planning on a short session. The first bet won, 2nd lost and 3rd won, putting me nicely ahead and I thought I'd stop there but decided to continue until I had a loser. I got 7 winners on the trot at all sorts of good prices :-)
So all in all I've made just over £5.5k in 6 weeks but in the last 10 days or so I;ve actually lost probably about £400 and put in lots of effort for this privedledge.
It's funny I was reading a thread on the betfair forum about someone with a really gambling issue asking for help and unusually there were lots of helpful responses including this one
When gamblers lose lots of money it`s there naturalinstinct to try and win it back. However, it never works and one gets in deeper and deeper. One stops looking and form and logic and starts betting prices, e.g. I`m 2 grand down so I`ll put £200 on the 10/1 shot to get my money back.
Best advice that I can give you is that you must forget all about the money you`ve lost - ITS GONE. Take a break from gambling for a week or so and recharge your batteries and confidence. If you can`t do that, cut your stakes back and start betting things you fancy, not prices. Win in small doses. Slow and steady wins the races.
Seriously, you`ve got to forget what you`ve lost or else you`ll end up losing everything by chasing.
And this one as well

Challenge Goes Bust
Monday, 28 September 2009
NEW WEEK
The days profit was £252.10
Friday and Saturday
On Friday I managed 4 lays on horses and one back on the football for the challenge which account for the majority of the days profit of £739.44.
On Saturday I managed a session on the aussie racing in the morning and a session on the US racing in the evening. Both were perofitable, however, if I'm honest with myself the US racing session was a bit silly as I was both tired and a bit drunk after an afternoon at the rubgy. Because of my afternoon out I only managed one bet for my challenge but it was a Lay at 4..31 so the return was good. I managed to make £775.45 on the day making it an excellent couple of days.
Friday and Saturday profit = £1514.89

Moving Along
The last blog I stated my daily and current week profit and at the end of the month the monthly profit. I think I will continue to do this. Only slight issue is the increased profit while my challenge is still going on.
Speaking of the challenge I have now have had 8 successful bets in a row after two more horse lays yesterday. I'm favouring lays at the moment of 12 or more runner handicaps. Current bank is £869.69 from the £250 I started with.
OK I've decided to lump it all together and record both the challenge and normal betting as one. So summary of yesterdays activities was as follows
2 sessions (one Aussie dogs and horses, one UK / US horses)
2 successful lays for the challenge
The month stats I provide are from the 25th August i.e. the start of the challenge and not September. Each week for recording purposes starts on a Sunday.
Thursday Profit - £447.49
Week to date profit - £2659.23 (includes the big win from Sundays Manchester derby)
If only every day and week was like this :-)

Up and down Time
Financially it's been pretty good so far this month but I just feel things could go pear shaped if I start to chase. I have done quite a lot of sessions on U.S. horse racing, UK horses, Aussie dogs and aussie horses and one losing session on UK dogs. As far as UK dogs are concerned as they say on dragons den, I'm out. I really struggle to make them pay. I've also had 5 bets on the footie this month which included a lovely trade on a thrilling manchester derby which I made big bucks and will have a huge effect over my profits for the month.
As I've mentioned football isn't really my thing so they are normally interest bets or where someone has pointed out a bit of value to me. I went to the PNE-SPurs game last night. Layed spurs on betfair and they won 5-1 !!:-(
A side from all this I have started a challenge again on the Betfair general betting forum. I did my first and only challenge on there everal months ago and it was both succesful and well received. It was great for establishing discipline. Basically it's called 10% a bet for 30 bets
Start Bank £250
Each bet risking 100% of current bank
Odds of each bet to provide at least 10% return
Averaging 1 bet each day
The first time round I attempted it, in two weeks I managed 34 bets winning bets in a row and better than 10% return each time which allowed me to bank profit along the way. In the end I made over £4.5k in the two weeks.
Anyway I have just started the same challenge take two. I have had 6 successful bets in 2 days all lays on the UK horses. Showing a profit of £414.66. I'm going to deduct the profits and potential liability (£250) from my figures for this blog because I don't want it to distort my p&l and give me cause to chase if thing go tits up on the challenge.
Also you'll see a tennis and darts figure on the pnl. A mate of mine iss into hi arrows and gives me the odd tip, to be honest it's just a bit of fun as they tend to be a bit hit and miss! The tennis was from the US open final. Where I had a bet buit traded out.
So the figures show the following:-
UK WALLET = + £3027.61
AUS WALLET = + £1061.63
TOTAL PROFIT = £4089.24
CHALLENGE PROFIT = - £414.66
CHALLENGE START BANK - £250
ADJUSTED PROFIT = £3424.58
So profit so far this month is £3424.58 even if things got tits up with the challenge. And to be fair I probably won't get chance for many sessions so there should only be what comes out of the challenge. This month will be a long one as I start this at the end of August. In fact today it's been a month since I started but the end of September is a week away so I get an extra week bonus for my figures.

Tut Tut Tut
1) Be happy with the early profit when the target is hit
2) Keep the focus to turn things around
On the race of it my figures from the latest session are decent enough but the overall profit hides the story of a potential nightmare.
I think in the past when these sorts of things happened I was totally honest with myself and therefore never learnt from my mistakes, so nows the time for honesty cos if I learn I WILL make it work long term!
OK so what went wrong?
Well as stated yesterday I was planning to do the US racing last night as my wife was working. I 'squeezed' in a quick session around midday and made £85.51 in no time! So I was going into the evening session with a nice profit already for the day. I had a great start with a winner in the first for just over £50 then over the next couple with saver bets landed got that up to £60. Now I know that where I should have stopped, should have been happy with the profit and meeting my target and enjoyed my evening doing something else.
Anyway a the evening progressed it proved to be very difficult and I was up and down like a yo yo. I had a bad run and was almost £500 but clawed it back steadily to about £50. I was really pleased with myelf because of the focus I used to do it. Then the was a very short priced I fancied so I backed it. It drifted to a bigger priced so I backed it some more. Basically I was being greedy as it would have given me a nice profit for the session and I would have stopped.
It lost and I started to lose a bit of focus. The chase began and wasn't going well so I ended up lumping over a Grandon short price fav that when I really thought about it I would have had a small lay on normally at the price. It lost finishing unplaced and things were looking dreadful. I was 'about' £2.8k down and it was late. I say 'about' cos I wasn't sure, all focus had gone and i was tired cos by now it was very late. I'd been at it since 6 and it was now 11.30.
I decided one last bet then bed. I bet a fancy in the next race for £500 and got matched at an avg 5.3 or thereabouts. It won in a photo fortunately for me, it was the best horse anyway and looked the winner on the turn for home anyway! So I was staring at £3.5 ish loss in the face potentially ended up £770.99 down instead. Hard to go to bed on a loss but after what at happened it felt like a profit.
Anyway I was up early this morning to continue the claw back and manged it on ozzie dogs and trots ! Ended up turning the £770.99 deficit into a profit. Had one big bet of £400 on a evens fav dog that won by half the track and the rest on smaller bets.
So in summary
over the 2 sessions on aussie racing yesterday, the US last night and the aussie session this morning my total profit ended up being £330.66.
A good profit but slightly irrelevant if I don't learn my lesson.

Moving Along
Horses - very similar to UK racing both from the form and market perspective although the markets are nowhere near as strong. I personnally don't have a great deal of experience of reading the form so I stick mainly to the place market (backing and laying). The a forumite on Betfair called Da Judge is the one to follow so I tend to use his advice on the rare occassions that I do play.
Trots - I used to hate trotting races but have learnt a lot from the posters on the forum. Most of the lot of races have one horse at the head of the market between 1.5 and 3.0. I just take a view of whether it i a value back or lay in the win market. Betfair market tends to be a very good guide as to the horses chance so I watch that carefully whilst always keeping an eye on the tote.
Dogs - I have virtually given up with the UK dogs. There is no value in laying them and when backing you can have such a bad run. I just haven't found a system that works, which in a way is frustrating because there is UK greyhound racing for 11 hours everyday (11am - 10pm). Aussie greyhounds is a different ball game, up to 8 dogs in a race and very often a clear fav trading around 1.5 - 2.5 on Betfair. So I treat these races the same as trotters. Although the greyhounds is very much how the race is going to be run. So many races can be read by a quickstarting 1 or 8 box dog pinging the lids and gettting a clear run and winning by 8 lengths or so. Market liquidity can be poor but this can be played to your advantage as most of the money comes in the 30 secs before the off so a dog that should be 2.2 can trade at between 1.9 and 3 in a matter of seconds as the big players try to get their bets matched.
The only problem with playing the aussie stuff is you end up with two PnL's because of the way Betfair split your betting.
So yesterday I played the aussie racing in the morning for an hour and half and the result was
In the afternoon I played the UK horse racing and had a footie bet in the evening and made a nice profit too
As you can see I have to obtain the PnL seperately.
I haven't posted my PNL as a jpeg today because it's just a bit of a ball ache to do and I'd have to do two. I'll probably just do that for weekly PnL
Anyway I made almost £200 in the two sessions which is a very pleasing result.
As we speak I have jut finished another early morning aussie session and made a steady profit

Dream Start

Last reckless day and the trial of slow and steady
This time I'm going to start posting my results as from tomorrow 25th August 2009. I've had reasonable couple of weeks but a shocking time before that. What convinced me was the past weekend. Saturday I was up and down all day but ended up making £1.5k or thereabouts. Sunday I lost £3k during the day but made back £1k in the evening. This morning I made £1k in the morning on the aussie greyhounds after being £1.5k down at one point. And this afternoon I made £500 so basically I've been all over the place. Saturday and Sunday all I did all day long was punt nothing else! And after nearly 3 days of solid punting I came out with about £1k but it could so easily have been £5k down! So tomorrow I will start the slow and steady approach again. In fact I started it this evening on the US racing which is my speciality and I'll explain about that in future posts to come. The reason why I'll start compiling by figures from tomorrow is I don't want them confused with the reckless stuff I've been doing!
I'm Back!
- £5k bank
- Minimum three hours set aside for betting sessions (some days I would have 3 sessions and some sessions would only last 30mins)
- £50 target per session minimum.
- By hook or by crook I always made at least my daily target but often exceeded.
- 6 sessions a week = £300 per week but I often racked up plenty of short sessions and made higher than my target per session. I was averaging around the £1k per week.
- Most of my punting centred around horse racing and greyhound racing. A lot was involved laying short price selections at less than 4.0 on Betfair.
To be honest I was close to losing my £5k bank twice before it finally came crashing down. However, if I am also honest at times there wasn't a lot of thought put into my selections particularly while I was down. Anway I have really struggled with this chasing instinct, which is why I have recommenced blogging.
I want to be back posting the regular £100 - £200 profit per day and around the £1k mark per week like before. Instead of the £1k profit one day, £2k loss the next.
So what is difference this time?
Well, I'm not going to explain that here but I will discuss the differences I have introduced into my punting style in my blog posts as things progress. I thought I knew a lot when I was doing my previous blog but have learnt a lot more over recent months. I have also picked up a few more contacts and get some good information on UK horse racing.
This is my last go at this if it doesn't work out I'm giving up for good!
